Episode 15 – Westbrook Brewing – Gose

Episode 15 of Drew’s Brews Reviews is here! The beer review show you never knew you wanted and no one needs. I take it easy with Westbrook’s drinkable Gose after a long break from the world of video beer reviewing. I took some time off to develop written content on my Web site, so I was gone a bit longer than I wanted. But I’m back and ready to man up with a sour beer from those mavericks of South Carolina. My face didn’t quite implode in on itself to create a black hole singularity, but the salt and sour makes for one hell of a puckering beer.

Last Week in Untappd – 10/27 – 11/3

This is a highlight of beers I’ve Untappd (drewsbrewsreviews) over the past week at bars and friends houses where I wasn’t able to do a full write up. I had a lot to choose from this week as I got to try a whole bushel of good beers. A bushel I tell you!

GozuWestbrook – Gozu
Location: Friend’s Apartment
Style: Gose (with yuzu juice)
Score: 3.5/5
Original Comment: Mandarin, floral, coriander, wheat aroma, acidic, salty, tart-gasmicly intense, bright vinous citrus. Acid bath. Woo! My tongue is crying

Additional Thoughts: Some great flavors here, but an incredibly intense tart bomb the sucks the saliva from your mouth. I’m not a big fan of acidic, tart drinks, alcoholic or not, so this could bump up a full point if you enjoy that taste sensation. Much thanks to Elisha for the opportunity to try this.

Flux Capacitor – Time Travels Beer into Your Belly

Recently, I’ve had conversations with my beer loving friends about the stagnate state of the keg to glass systems used by most every bar out there. This archaic dinosaur from the colder-is-better popular pilsner era isn’t meant to handle the wide array of craft beers we enjoy in this time of enlightenment. To bring on the needed warms, I employ a basic ordering system of hitting two beers at a time, going for one I can drink cold while the other high-ABV imperial bomb warms up. Well, my crude and uncivilized methods could be a thing of the past due to a forward thinking bar owner named Gabe Gordon.

Firestone Walker – Parabola 2014 Review

ParabolaAll You Need to Know

Brewery: Firestone Walker
Style: Russian Imperial Stout
ABV: 13%
Cost: ???? (24oz)
Glassware: Snifter, Teku
Temp: 55°F
Availability: March
Purchased@: Beer Trade

Quick Take: While 2014 Parabola is not the pinnacle of the Parabola series (that goes to the boozy complex and black cherry undercurrent having Parabola of 2012), it is an improvement over 2013, being smoother and less boozy. Warm, sensuous, delicious…Parabola is as close to bourbon-aged perfection that I’ve come across. Firestone has crafted and continues to craft one of my favorite liquids of all time.

Westbrook Brewing – Citrus Ninja Exchange Review

Citrus NinjaAll You Need to Know

Brewery: Westbrook Brewing
Style: Imperial IPA
ABV: 9.5%
Cost: ???? (12oz)
Glassware: Snifter, Tulip
Temp: 50°F
Availability: Limited
Purchased@: Beer Trade
Brew Date: Mid August
Drink Date: Mid October

Quick Take: This is one of the bigger disappointments I’ve come across after a pretty stellar run of beers. That isn’t to say it’s bad, it isn’t, but the heavy malt and lack of hops (and grapefruit actually) makes this simply a good beer. The lack of hop bite makes me a sad panda, but those that are only IPA curious may actually find a lot to like with the malt being the star of the show.
