Maine Brewing Co. – Dinner Review

DinnerAll You Need to Know

Brewery: Maine Brewing Co.
Style: Double IPA
ABV: 8.2%
Cost: ???? (12oz)
Glassware: Tulip, Snifter
Temp: 55°F
Availability: Various Times
Purchased@: Beer Trade

Quick Take: Out of the numerous Maine beers I’ve sampled, Dinner is hands down my favorite and one of the best IPAs I’ve had. This is a great example of a rich, full-bodied, finely hopped IPA similar to those Vermont IPAs you hear so much about. The dank deliciousness of Dinner makes this a beer worth seeking out, even if the availability appears limited right now. I gotta say that Maine Brewing knocked this one out of the state.

Evolution Brewing – Lot 6 Review

Lot 6All You Need to Know

Brewery: Evolution Craft Brewing
Style: DIPA
ABV: 8.5%
Cost:  $3.29 (12oz)
Glassware: Tulip
Temp: 55°F
Availability: Various Times
Purchased@: Brass Rail

Quick Take: I would place this firmly in the average category. That nice, toasty resin aroma is delectable and the taste is balanced, but it isn’t enough to overcome this pedestrian DIPA’s shortcomings. The lack of assertive qualities or identity makes this a boring beer. Nothing for the fresh hop heads or bright citrus pine nuts out there to get excited about, but you can do far worse.

Episode 11 – Great Lakes – Chillwave

Episode 11 of Drew’s Brews Reviews is here! The beer review show you never knew you wanted and no one needs. The IPA train keeps on rolling and here comes Chillwave, a beer released in February, that I drank in April, and I’m finally finishing the review in practically June. Sigh… Anyway, even though this is not a beer readily available at this time, I thought it is one worth talking about. People are probably a little sick of the West Coast IPAs at this point, but there is room to discuss at least one more before we slip into the summer months, which is of course Coors country. Thank you for existing Coors Light Summer Brew…thank you.

Mikkeller – 1000 IBU Review

Mikkeller 1000 IBU.All You Need to Know

Brewery:  Mikkeller
Style: Imperial IPA
ABV: 9.6%
Cost:  $15 (12oz)
Glassware: Tulip
Temp: 55°F
Availability: Rotating
Purchased@: Friendly Greek

Quick Take: While lacking complexity, Mikkeller’s 1000 IBU beer is much more refined than I anticipated. The 1000 IBU aspect is a bit of a gimmick and the cost is a little steep, but the follow through on a quality, mega-hopped beer makes this one worth trying. You have to be in an IPA state of mind and want the dirtiest, most lingering hops bitter finishes I have come across yet, but even IPA interested people can find something to like here.

The Alchemist – Heady Topper Review

Episode 10 of Drew’s Brews Reviews is here! The beer review show you never knew you wanted and no one needs. It’s an IPA time of year I guess as I down yet another bitter-tastic beer, but this is the top hop juice in the world, Heady Topper! At least it was at the time I recorded the review. This is a banked episode that I held onto for a few weeks, which forced me to adjust some information therein, so apologies for that.

I will say that I’m glad to see this review released as beer blog law states that Heady Topper must be reviewed lest I be cast into the malted wastelands and pitted against Lord Humungus in vicious bourbon barrel-aged combat for my crimes against beer blogdom and the blog-o-sphere. Yeah, everyone reviews this.
